COURSE DESCRIPTION

Research and development organizations protect assets that are hard or impossible to replace: pre-patent inventions, trade secrets, clinical trial and GxP-regulated data, export-controlled designs and years of experimental results spread across corporate IT, laboratory instruments, HPC clusters and collaboration platforms shared with partner institutions. Nation-state groups, departing insiders, compromised managed service providers and AI-enabled attackers target this research, and a major incident runs several clocks in parallel under GDPR, NIS2, GxP rules and export controls, with leaders accountable for the outcome.

Building on the Beginner and Advanced courses, this course is for those who design, lead and govern cybersecurity in research and development organizations. It covers threat modeling, zero trust for research environments, incident response playbooks, digital forensics, security architecture reviews, governance, compliance with GDPR, export controls, GxP, NIS2, ISO 27001 and the EU AI Act, executive crisis management, roadmap design and strategic forecasting.

The course is developed by the CISO Edu team – the cybersecurity training platform of Advanced Vision IT. The company has 15 years of industry experience and is certified to ISO 27001, ISO 9001, and ISO 20000-1 standards. It is also an AWS Cloud Certified Partner and holds multiple certifications and partnerships with leading cybersecurity solution providers, including Sophos, Acronis, and other established technology companies. The content is developed by specialists who work daily with NIS2 compliance requirements, industrial control systems (ICS), and critical infrastructure environments.

What Participants Will Learn

  • ✓Build threat models for research systems with STRIDE-style thinking, map data, infrastructure, human and physical attack surfaces, and prioritize risks with FAIR-style quantification, drawing on patterns such as the Operation Cloud Hopper supply-chain compromise.
  • ✓Design a zero trust architecture for research with identity-centric access, role- and attribute-based control, just-in-time provisioning, macro- and micro-segmentation, device trust and continuous verification.
  • ✓Develop playbooks for IP theft and data exfiltration, ransomware against research infrastructure and compromised instruments, assign roles including the data protection and export control officers, and test them through tabletop exercises.
  • ✓Lead forensic investigations using HPC scheduler, ELN and LIMS audit trail, repository and instrument logs, preserve evidence with chain of custody and hash verification, address legal and anti-forensics issues and work with external investigators.
  • ✓Conduct security architecture reviews of research networks, identity and access, data protection, applications, HPC and instruments, and security monitoring and operations.
  • ✓Establish governance for research organizations with the right governance model, a policy hierarchy from organization to laboratory level, clear roles, three lines of defense, board oversight and governance KPIs.
  • ✓Map controls to risks across GDPR, export controls, GxP data integrity, NIS2, ISO 27001 and the EU AI Act, and build an integrated compliance program.
  • ✓Lead executive decisions and notifications during a crisis, and design a multi-year roadmap with maturity assessments, phased execution and budgeting that anticipates AI-enabled threats, supply-chain and cloud risk, quantum risk, autonomous labs and insider threats.
